On the Arras Memorial is the name of 20/864 (201864) Lance Corporal James William Palmer, serving with the 27th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Irish) who died 28/04/1917.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

James William Palmer was born at Newcastle in 1887; his parents were John and Margaret Palmer.

In 1891 James was four and the family, including his brother John E Palmer, lived at 5 Middle Steads, Widdrington in Northumberland.

James William married Dorothy Crackett who was born in 1891 at Choppington in July 1908 and they had one child, Margaret Ann. In 1911, the census shows James was a miner and his family were living as boarders at 14, Second Street, Netherton with his wife’s family. In the house at this time there were 11 people living in 4 rooms.

James William enlisted at Bedlington when living at 15, Second Street, Netherton and was originally in the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) and then transferred to the Tyneside Irish. The CWGC records show his wife remarried after the death of her husband, becoming Dorothy Stewart living in the same village. In the records two service numbers have been used for James William Palmer - 20/864 and 201864.
