Nixon, J., Pte., 1918

Durham Light Infantry

On the Soissons Memorial is the Commonwealth War commemoration for 81312 Private Joseph Nixon, serving with the Durham Light Infantry who died 29/05/1918.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

Joseph Nixon was born in 1899 at Bedlington, Northumberland to parents Mary and John Nixon of 1, Gordon Terrace.

In 1901, Joseph and his family were living in his grandfather’s house at Coach Road, Bedlington. His father, born at Bedlington 1867, was coal miner hewer.

Joseph, a miner, enlisted at Newcastle upon Tyne whilst living at his parent’s house at Bedlington. All indications are he was single as his effects went to his mother Mary E. Nixon.

The Army Service Records show on 3rd April 1918 Joseph was transferred from the 2nd Training Reserve Battalion to the 15th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry. They also show he had three sisters Elizabeth Jane, Mary, Margaret and a brother John who were all living at 1, Gordon Terrace, Bedlington.

Joseph Nixon is remembered in Bedlington on B15.02, B15.06, B15.20 and B15.26 page 70 and in the D.L.I. Book of Remembrance page 135
