Mutton, J., Pte., 1916

On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 23/1284 Private John Mutton, serving with the 23rd Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) who died 01/07/1916.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

John Mutton, the son of David and Elizabeth Mutton, was born at Shankhouses, Northumberland about 1881.

In 1901, John was aged 19 working in the coal mines as coal putter and living with his parents at 37, Laburnum Terrace, Ashington. Also in the house were siblings Joseph 12, Mary 15, Florence 13, Lisa 11, James 6, and Eva who was few months old.

John married Elizabeth Brewis in 1904 and in the 1911 Census he is shown as a coal hewer in the coal mines and living at 221, Yard Row, Netherton, a colliery village near Bedlington. There are two children in the family at this time Edward age 3 and Jacob age 2. Interestingly, John Mutton is also recorded in the 1911 Census at his father’s house in the same village recorded by a different invigilator. His parents were living at 32, Howard Row, Netherton.

John enlisted at Bedlington when living at 71, Yard Row, Netherton. The CWGC records show he was the son of Dave Mutton and the husband of Elizabeth Turnbull (formally Mutton) of 257, Yard Row, Netherton Colliery. His widow Elizabeth married John Turnbull in 1920.

John is remembered in Barrington on B96.02 and in Bedlington on B15.07 and B15.26 page 121
