On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 24/1428 Private James McSherry, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Irish) 24th Battalion who died 01/07/1916.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

James McSherry was born in Bedlington in 1891 to parents Timothy and Maria McSherry. In 1901 James was living in his Irish grandmother’s house at Glebe Row, Bedlington with his brother John McSherry. In 1911 Census he was living at 5, Millbank Terrace, Bedlington and is shown as a nephew in this household. At this time he was a coal miner.

James married Matilda Renolds on 26th June 1915 at St. Bede’s Catholic Church, Bedlington, where he was christened. When he enlisted at Bedlington, Northumberland they were living at Hirst Terrace in the same town. His effects went to his widow Matilda.

James McSherry is remembered in Bedlington on B15.02, B15.06, B15.11, B15.16 /a>, B15.17 and B15.26 page 66
