On the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France, is the name of 24/30 Private Joseph McHugh, serving with the 24th (Tyneside Irish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 01/07/1916.

Morpeth Herald 25/08/1916 carries the following:
Pte. J. McHugh, Bedlington, missing.

Morpeth Herald 24/11/1916 carries a brief obituary:
Private Jos. McHugh, Hollymount, Bedlington, killed in action. He had been missing since July 1st.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following information:

Joseph McHugh was born in Bedlington in 1885 to parents Michael McHugh, born in Ireland, and Bridget McHugh (nee Paton) born in Staffordshire. Joseph’s father was a coal miner. In 1891 when aged 7 Joseph was living with his parents and 3 siblings at Old Hall Bedlington where his father a coal miner. The 1901 Census shows the family at the same address, and Joseph was 17. In 1911 they moved to Hirst Terrace, Bedlington.

When Joseph enlisted he was living at Hollymount, Bedlington. All the records indicate Joseph did not marry. In 1917 his effects went to mother Bridget. In 1920 his sister, Mary A. Malone, and nephews Patrick and Anthony Neary received money from the Army.
