Middleton, S.M., Pte., 1917

On the Arras Memorial is the name of 18027 Private Samuel Moses Middleton, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Irish) 25th Battalion who died 30/11/1917.

Morpeth Herald 04/01/1918 carries a brief obituary:

ROLL OF HONOUR

MIDDLETON.- Killed in action on November 30th, 1917, aged 30 years, Private Samuel Moses Middleton, 18027, N.F., B.E.F., son of Thomas Middleton, of Bedlington.- Ever remembered by his father, brother, and sister.

Samuel Moses Middleton was born in 1888 at Bedlington, Northumberland; his father was Thomas and his mother Hannah Middleton.

In 1891, his family was living at Doctor Terrace, Bedlington and included his father Thomas, aged 50, a coal miner, mother Hannah 32, and siblings James 19, Henry 16, John William 8, and Sarah 2. Samuel was about three years old at this time.

In 1901, Samuel lived at Old Colliery Row, Bedlington with his family when he was aged 13 and employed in the coal mines. Father Thomas was 60, and a retired coal miner. Also in the house were siblings John 18, Sarah 12, Thomas 8.

The 1911 Census shows he is single aged 24 and living at Rose Villa, Catholic Row Bedlington working as a miner labourer underground. In the house are his brother James who is head of the household, his wife Catherine, their children and his father Thomas who is now 71. The six family members were living in two rooms.

When he enlisted at Newcastle on Tyne he was living at Catholic Row, Bedlington. Samuel is listed in the Ireland Memorial Records 1914 – 1920. His brother John William Middleton was killed in action on 17th October 1917. His effects went to his father. None of the records indicate he was married.
