Richard McNally was born in Bedlington, Northumberland in 1887 to parents John and Margaret McNally. In 1891, when aged 2, he was living with his parents at Walker Terrace, Bedlington. In the 1901 Census, now aged 12, he was living with his married sister Margaret Riley and family as a lodger at Coach Road, Bedlington. In 1911 he is shown as single and working as a labourer underground in the coal mines. At this time he is still living as a lodger with the Riley family and was living at this address when he enlisted at Blyth, Northumberland. His effects went to his sister Margaret’s children. Richard was formerly 15112 in the West Yorkshire Regiment and his military records have survived and are available. These show his medals went to his brother Owen McNally living at Scotland Gate, Choppington. Richard, who joined the Army in August 1914, was appointed a Lance Corporal (unpaid) on 13/9/1918. He died 16 days later.
