Kane, J., Pte., 1917

Northamptonshire Regiment

On the Tyne Cot Memorial is the name of 40686 Private John Kane, serving with the Northamptonshire Regiment who died 10/11/1917.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

John Kane parents John and Annie Kane were from Ireland and John was born in Bonnington, Midlothian, Scotland in 1893. The 1901 Scotland Census shows that his father was employed as a whinstone quarryman and the family, which included eight children, was living at Bonnington.

By 1911, the family had moved to Northumberland and were living at Maiden’s Hall, Morpeth when John Kane (junior) was 18. In the family home at this time, which consisted of three rooms, were siblings Julia 22, Michael 18, Catherine 12 and James 12. Both father and son worked as roadmen for Morpeth Council. John enlisted at Bedlington when living at Windmill Farm, Choppington which was located on the east side of the road from Bedlington to Choppington near to Glebe farm. There are no records to show John was married.

Sadly his brother Michael was also killed in action on 21st April 1917.

He is remembered in Bedlington on B15.02 , B15.09, B15.17 and B15.26 page 95
