In the Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 16309 Private William Hopkins, serving with the East Yorkshire Regiment (6th Battalion) who died 15/12/1915.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

William Hopkins was born in 1890 at Bedlington, Northumberland to parents William and Elizabeth Hopkins. His family lived at High Street Bedlington in 1891 and also in 1901 William was living with siblings George 9, James 6 and Catherine aged 1 at Foggans Place, Bedlington, where his father was a miner. By 1911, when William was 21 years old, he was living with his family at Glebe Row, Bedlington. His father died between 1901 and 1911. William was a coal putter in the mines and did not marry. He was living at Renwick’s Yard at the time he enlisted at Bedlington. William left with his regiment from Avonmouth on 1st July 1915 for Gallipoli via Mudros and landed at Suvla Bay on the 7th August 1915. William aged 25 years died after contacting pneumonia and his effects went to his mother Elizabeth.
