Ferguson, G.H., Pte., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 23/852, Private George Henry Ferguson, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) 23rd Battalion who died 01/07/1916.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

George Henry Ferguson, the eldest son of Mark and Elizabeth Ferguson (nee Mather), was born at Bedlington in about 1893. George’s father was a blacksmith who was born in Tynemouth and his mother was born at Bebside near Blyth. His parents’ marriage in 1890 was registered in Morpeth. In 1901, when George was 9, his family was living at South Shields, including his siblings Gertrude 7, Robert 5, and Ernest who was less than a year old. By 1911, he was aged 18, single and working in the coal mines as a colliery haulage lad underground while living at 9, Mersey Terrace, Hirst Ashington. Additions to the family include Alex 16, John 7, Joseph 4 and Elizabeth 1. After that time he moved to Netherton, Northumberland to work at the colliery there. George was living at 56, Howard Row in that village when he enlisted at Bedlington. None of the documents seen indicate he was married. He was 23 years old when he died.
