On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 20/750 Private Andrew Dowie, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) 20th Battalion, who died 01/07/1916.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

Andrew Dowie was born in 1896 at Sunderland and was the son of Thomas and Isabelle (nee Hardy) Dowie. Thomas, a miner who was born in Netherton, and his wife, full name Emma Isabelle Hardy, were married in 1878 which was registered at Tynemouth.

In 1891, the family were living at Southwick in County Durham when Andrew was aged about 6.
By 1901 there were ten family members living in their house at 184, Longhirst Terrace, Pegswood including five boys and three girls.

In 1911 Andrew, aged 15, was working in the coal mines and living at 19, Third Street, Netherton with his family which is the address shown when he enlisted. Andrew did not appear to have married.

Tragically, Mr and Mrs Dowie lost two sons in the Great War.
