On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 20/569 Private George Hayes Hindhaugh, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) 20th Battalion who died 01/07/1916.

George Hayes Hindhaugh was born in Bedlington, Northumberland in 1898 and his parents were Robert Wardlaw Hindhaugh and Sarah Ann (nee Hayes) Hindhaugh. George’s parents' marriage in 1896 was registered at Morpeth.

The Hindhaugh family lived in 108, Windsor Avenue, Gateshead in 1901 where George’s father was employed as a stationary engineman. In the house at this time were George’s siblings Eva aged 1 and Gilbert who was four months old. ,p.In 1911, George, now aged 13, was a newspaper boy and his family were living at 2, Deanery Street, Bedlington. This street is at the west of Bedlington running parallel with Ridge Terrace. At this time his father was a boiler fireman at the colliery. George was living in Deanery Street, Bedlington when he enlisted. The CWGC records show his parents were living at 58, Third Street, Ashington after George died. His effects amounting to £7 0s 0d and £2 10s 8d went to his mother Sarah Ann. George does not appear to have married

He is remembered in Ashington A17.43, and inBedlington on B15.01, B15.02, B15.09, B15.20, B15.21 and in B15.26 page 33
