Ellis, Eltis, J., Pte., 1916

Tyneside Scottish Badge

On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 21/796 Private John Ellis, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) 21st Battalion who died 13/08/1916.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

It should be noted the family name in the documentation checked uses both Eltis and Ellis. John Eltis was born at Sunnyside, Choppington Northumberland about 1885. He was the son of John Eltis, a miner and Ann Eltis (nee Alsop).

In 1891, when John was aged 6, his family lived at Telephone Row, Bedlington. Telephone Row was one of the colliery rows built near to the Bedlington Doctor Pit. Also in the house at this time are siblings James 8, William 3, Sarah 11 and Francis 1.

By 1901, John’s father had died (1895) and he was still living at Telephone Row in the house of his widowed mother. In 1905 his mother died.

When John Eltis was 26 (1911) he was living at Ridge Terrace, Bedlington in the house of his brother in law Robert Morris and still working as a coal miner.

John enlisted when living at Ridge Terrace and there are no records to show he was married. On his death his effects went to his brothers, sisters and half-sister.
