BEDLINGTON

Armstrong, J.T., Pte, 1916
In Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 17948 John Thomas Armstrong, serving with the Yorkshire Regiment (9th Battalion) who died 08/10/1916.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

John Thomas Armstrong was born at Hepburn in Northumberland but his date of birth has not been established. Sadly other information about this brave person has not been located. It’s possible due to where he enlisted and the regiment he joined that his family had Yorkshire links. His name appears on the Whitley Memorial School Roll of Honour and he would have been a pupil there. However there is no information to show he was a miner. William was living at Vulcan Place Bedlington when he enlisted at Bridlington in Yorkshire.

Military records show he went to France on 26th August 1915 and was awarded the 1915 Star, British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

He is remembered at Bedlington on B15.02, B15.09, B15.19, B15.20 and B15.26 page 59
