BEDLINGTON

Stern, P., L/Cpl., M.M. 1918
In Tezze British Cemetery, Treviso, Italy, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 6817 Lance Corporal Philip Stern M.M. serving with 10th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 29/10/1918.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

Philip was the older brother of Marcus who also died. His military record shows that he was born in Bradford but enlisted in Bedlington. His parents, Isaac Jacob and Celia Stern were born in Hungary and evidently fled to Britain during the pogroms. They lived in the Leeds/Bradford area from 1893 to 1897 at least, although the census information suggests that they were in Hungary from 1898 to 1901 and there is no sign of them on the 1901 census. From 1902 to 1906 they lived in the Colchester area before moving to Newcastle.

The CWGC certificate refers to Isaac and Celia living at 100, Blenheim Street, Newcastle, which was their address in 1911, but Philip and Marcus are both named on the Netherton Coal Company's Roll of Honour so at some point before 1917 they must have been living in Netherton.

He is remembered in Bedlington on B15.07 and in Newcastle on NUT087, NUT089, NUT180 and NUT212
