BEDLINGTON

James, T., Pte., 1918
In Gonnehem British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 43464 Private Thomas James serving with 21st Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own) who died 19/07/1918.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

Thomas's military record shows that he was born in Bedlington and enlisted in Newcastle. He was born in the spring of 1889, the youngest of seven children to George James and his wife Mary. George was a miner and in 1891 the family were living at Bell's Place, Bedlington. Mary died in 1898 and in 1901 George and his three youngest children were living at Burdon Terrace, Bedlington. I cannot find Thomas in the 1911 census, and he doesn't appear in the Coal Company Rolls of Honour so it would appear that he did not become a miner like his father and older brother. He married Elizabeth Elliott in 1916, and she was his legatee.

Although serving with The West Yorkshire Regiment at the time of his death, Thomas was formerly no. 28/628 serving in 28th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Irish)

He is remembered in Bedlington on B15.02, B15.09, B15.11and B15.16
