BEDLINGTON

Devlin, P., Pte., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 20/531 Private Peter Devlin serving with 20th (1st Tyneside Scottish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

Peter was the third son of Peter and Margaret Devlin and the older brother of Francis Henry Devlin who died a fortnight later and is named on the same memorial.

Peter's military record shows that he was born in Workington in 1893, and enlisted in Bedlington. In 1901 he was living at 11, High Church Street, Workington with his family, his father being an ironworker. His father died in 1907, and some time before the 1911 census Peter and three friends of a similar age moved across the country in search of work. In 1911 he was boarding with the Willis family in Phoenix Row, Bedlington, and working down the pit as a putter. Despite the Irish connections Peter did not join the Tyneside Irish like his brother, but instead joined the Tyneside Scottish like the majority of miners in Bedlington.

Peter Devlin is remembered at Bedlington on B15.17
