Young, E.J., Cpl., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France, is the name of 23411 Corporal Ernest James Young, serving with the 23rd (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 01/07/1916.

Morpeth Herald 02/03/1917 carries a brief obituary:

ROLL OF HONOUR

YOUNG.- Killed in action on July 1st, 1916, previously reported mising, Corporal E.J. Young, N.F., dearly beloved husband of Elizabeth Young, 15 Third Street, Netherton Colliery.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

Ernest is the oldest man named on a memorial in Bedlington.

Ernest was born in Kitty Brewster, Aberdeen, but in the census records this is sometimes confused with Kitty Brewster, Blyth. Ernest was born in 1870, the third of at least six children to James and Isabella Young, and in 1881 the family were living at the Percy Arms in Cowpen. Ernest followed his father into the brewing trade and in1891 he was lodging at 103, Newgate street, Morpeth, and working as a clerk at a brewery. The census says he married Elizabeth in 1891 but I can't find a marriage record for that year. By 1901 they had four children, which was probably the reason why Ernest had changed jobs and become a miner. They were living at Jackson's Yard, Morpeth. In 1911 the family were living at 15, Third Street, Netherton Colliery, and Ernest was working as a hewer at the pit with two of his sons. They had seven children of whom six survived.

He is remembered in Bedlington on B15.07 and in B15.26 page 112
