BEDLINGTON

Wolfendale, A., Pte., 1916
In Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 11367 Private Anthony Wolfendale serving with 6th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment who died 14/02/1916.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

Anthony was born in Radcliffe, near Amble, in 1887, the second child and eldest son to James and Isabella Wolfendale, and in 1891 the family were living at Radcliffe Terrace, Hauxley. In 1894 his mother Isabella died and two years later his father married Margaret Hardy, a widow who was born in Newcastle but who had two children born in the U.S.A. In 1901 the family were living at Long Row, Ashington and Anthony was working as a pony driver, having joined his father at the pit. In 1907 he married Isabella Wallwork and they had two children; Isabella in 1910 and Charles in 1913. In 1911 the family were living at 51, Maple Street, Hirst, Ashington, but at the time of his enlistment they were living at Rock Cottages, Humford. As he joined the 6th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment Anthony was one of the first men in Bedlington to enlist, and he fought at Gallipoli. When they withdrew from the Dardanelles the East Yorks. were stationed in Alexandria to re-train before being sent to France. It is likely that Anthony was wounded at Gallipoli and died in hospital in Alexandria of wounds aggravated by a long sea journey and the heat.

He is remembered in Bedlington on B15.02, B15.06 and in B15.26 page 70
