BEDLINGTON

Wight, G.P., Pte., 1918
On the Arras Memorial is the name of 59081 Private George Prior Wight serving with 1st Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own) who died 21/03/1918.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

George was born in Bedlington in1898 to Robert and Hannah Wight, the youngest of five children. His father died the following year and in 1901 the family were living at Bedlington Market Place. His mother was working as a charwoman. In 1911 the family were still at the Market Place, but there was no sign of Hannah. George's older brother Charles was the Head of the house at age 20, and his 16 year old sister was the housekeeper. George is named on the Bedlington Coal Company Roll of Honour so he evidently became a miner like his brothers. In the summer of 1917 he married Elizabeth Bower.

He is remembered in Bedlington on B15.02 and in B15.26 page 78
