BEDLINGTON

Wallace, C., Pte., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 23/1291 Private Christopher Wallace serving with 23rd Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

Christopher was born in Sleekburn in 1899, the sixth child of George and Mary Wallace. His father was a hewer, born in Haltwhistle and he had lived in Bedlington since at least 1884 when he married Mary Nicholson, but in 1900 they moved to Longhorsley, and in 1901 they were living in Longhorsley Village. After a few years there they moved to Benwell, and then to Stakeford, where they were living at 26, West Terrace in 1911. Christopher had become a hewer like his father. The Enlistment Book gives his name as Christopher Nicholson Robinson Wallace, and his address as 46, Howard Row, Netherton Colliery. Christopher enlisted in Bedlington, and his legatee was his father so it is most likely that he was not married.

He is remembered in Bedlington on B15.06 and in B15.26 page 126
