BEDLINGTON

Turner, J., Pte., 1916
In Contay British Cemetery, Contay, Somme, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 16393 Private John Turner, serving with the 6th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, who died 20/09/1916.

Morpeth Herald 20/10/1916 carries a brief obituary:

Private John Turner, 3 Arcade Glebe Row, Bedlington, was killed in action on Sept. 20th.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

John was born in South Shields in 1888, the third child and eldest son of Nicholas and Cecilia Turner. His father was a miner and the family lived at 91, Alfred Street, South Shields in 1891 and at 25, Harold Street, South Shields in 1901. I don't know whether the whole family moved to Bedlington or not, but John was living there in 1908 when he married Mary Hannah Richardson from Haswell in Durham. John was a hewer like his father, and he and Mary had five children; William (1909), Jenny (1910), John (1912), Thomas (1913) and Alice (1916).

In 1911 John and his family were living at Salmon Place, Bedlington, but the Enlistment Book gives his address as Kidd's Yard – it also includes him on another page but without an address. The Enlistment Book cites him as serving in the Dardanelles, Egypt and France, so we know that he was one of the first men in Bedlington to enlist, for the 6th Bn. East Yorks was the first regiment to enlist men in Bedlington, and the Dardanelles, Egypt and France was the route that they took, His military record shows that he died of his wounds, and the 9th and 49th Casualty Clearing Stations used Contay Cemetery.

He is remembered in Bedlington on B15.02 B15.26 pages 96 and 112
