BEDLINGTON

Swindale, G.D., Pte., 1916
In Grandcourt Road Cemetery, Grandcourt, Somme, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 23457 Private George Dawson Swindale serving with 8th Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment who died between 18/11/1916 and 19/11/1916.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

George's military record states that he was born in Blyth and enlisted in Bedlington, but I couldn't find a birth record for someone of his name anywhere in England in the 1880s, then I found that his name had been changed over time. George was born in Newsham in 1883 to Hugh and Mary Jane Swindle. His father died in 1888 and Mary married William Robson White the following year. The White family were living in Routledge's Buildings, Sleekburn in 1891. George became a miner like his stepfather and in 1904 George Swindale married Jane Ellen Davis. They had two daughters, Lily Frances in 1904 and Edna May in 1906. In 1911 George and his family were living in Burdon Terrace, Bedlington, with Jane's mother and grandmother. Although serving with the North Staffordshire Regiment at the time of his death, George had previously served as no. 11362 in the East Yorkshire Regiment. At the time of his enlistment he was living in Millbank Crescent.

Morpeth Herald 12/01/1917 carries a brief obituary:
