BEDLINGTON

Stoddart, A., Pte., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 20/661 Private Albert Stoddart serving with 20th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

Albert was born in Bedlington in 1894, the second child of William and Annie Stoddart. His father was a miner and in 1901 the family were living at Gladstone Terrace, but in 1911 they had moved to 2, Gordon Terrace, and Albert and his older brother William and younger brother John were working at the pit with their father.

Albert died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, one of the many Tyneside Scottish to die that day. His legatee was his father which indicates that he wasn't married.

His older brother William served as a Corporal in the Coldstream Guards and died at home in the spring of 1917; he doesn't have a CWGC entry.

His younger brother John served in the Army Service Corps and survived the War.

Albert is remembered in Bedlington on B15.02, B15.06, B15.20 and in B15.26 page 134
