Menin Gate Memorial

On the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial is the name of 1079 Private Joseph Smith serving with 1st/7th Northumberland Fusiliers who died 28/05/1915.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

Joseph was born in Murton, Sunderland, in 1899, the third son of Robert and Amelia Smith. His father was a miner and in 1891 the family were living in Bedlington Station. They moved in about 1896 first to North Shield and then to South Shields, and in 1911 they were living in Green Lane Crescent, Harton, South Shields. About five years later they moved back across the river and in 1911 they were living at 1, New South Row, Bedlington, and Joseph and his younger brother John were both working as hewers down the pit with their father. John and a younger brother Jacob also served but returned, although John was gassed.

He is remembered in Bedlington on B15.02, B15.09, B15.20 and in B15.26 page 84
