BEDLINGTON

Shadforth, J., Sjt., 1917
On the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France, is the name of 43366 Sergeant James Shadforth, serving with the 10th Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales’s Own), who died 23/04/1917.

Morpeth Herald 18/05/1917 carries a brief obituary:

ROLL OF HONOUR

SHADFORTH.- Killed in action on April 23rd, 1917, aged 22, Sergt. James Shadforth, West Yorks, second son of John and Frances Shadforth, 26 North Terrace, Bedlington.- Deeply mourned by his sorrowing father, mother, brothers, and sisters, and brother-in-law, also his brother, John Willie, now serving in France.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

James was born in Bedlington in 1895 one of seven children to John and Frances Shadforth. His father was a colliery mason and in 1901 the family were living at Bedlington Bank Top. In 1911 their address is given as 5, Wood Row at the Bank Top, and what is unusual about their census entry is that all of the children who have left school have a job outside of the home, including the girls. James was a colliery labourer underground. James's legatee was his father, which would indicate that he wasn't married, and although he was serving with the West Yorkshire Regiment at the time of his death he was previously service number 11375 in the East Yorkshire Regiment. His brother Matthew served in the Coldstream Guards, but as he was only 19 when the War ended he appears to have still been training in England.

James Shadforth is remembered in Bedlington on B15.02, B15.06 and in B15.26 page 81
