BEDLINGTON

Scougal, T., Gnr., 1918
On the Arras Memorial is the name of 59343 Gunner Thomas Scougal serving with 11th Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery who died 21/03/1918.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

Thomas was born at 43, Doctor Terrace, Bedlington in 1894, one of eight children to Thomas and Mary Scougal. We know this because his exact place of birth is given on the 1911 census form rather than just the town. His father Thomas was named as his legatee, which would indicate that Thomas wasn't married. His father was a miner, but Thomas evidently decided that this was not the job for him and in 1911 he was working as a carter and lodging at 7, Pretoria Avenue, Morpeth, the home of carting contractor William Whittle, his brother-in-law. Thomas enlisted in Newcastle.

He is remembered in Bedlington on B15.02, B15.09, B15.20 and in B15.26 page 48
