Cunningham, J.W., Pte. 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France, is the name of 23/698 Private John William Cunningham, serving with the 23rd (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 01/07/1916.

Morpeth Herald 02/03/1917 carries a brief obituary:

Private J.W. Cunningham, 1 Second Street, Netherton Colliery, was killed in action on July 1st. He had been missing since that date.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

John was born in Choppington in November 1897 and baptised on 1st December . His parents were Stephen and Margaret Cunningham and he was their second child and elder son. His father was a miner and John followed him in working down the pit. In 1901 the family was living at Back Street Choppington, but about 1908 they moved to 1 Second Street, Netherton Colliery.

John William Cunningham is remembered at Bedlington on B15.07 and B15.26 page 103
