On the Arras Memorial is the name of Tyneside Z/7032 Able Seaman Ernest Barnfather, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 23/04/1917.

In Holy Sepulchre churchyard is a family headstone which includes:

AB Ernest Barnfather
Killed in action
Gavrelle April 23, 1917
aged 20 years.

Margaret Allison reports that in 1911 he lived at 42 Seventh Row, Ashington.

Colin Boyd has submitted the following:

Ernest was born on March 15th 1897 and was working as a gardener living with his father, George Strickland Barnfather, at 42, Seventh Row, Ashington when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on August 20th 1915. He served with the Drake Battalion as a telephone operator until August 8th 1916 when he was hospitalised with debility. After rejoining his unit on November 15th 1916 Ernest was posted as missing assumed killed in action on April 23rd 1917.
