James was born on 6th August 1889. He was working as a miner living with his wife, Isabella at 49, Sixth Row, Ashington when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on 10th November 1914.
He joined the Hawke Battalion on 10th March 1915 and was invalided to the UK from France on 29th March 1917 suffering from an injury to a heel.
James rejoined the Hawke Battalion on 28th August 1917 and was hospitalised on 12th March 1918 following a gas attack.
After rejoining the Hawke Battalion again on 3rd June 1918 James was killed in action on 25th August 1918.
