ASHINGTON

Swanson, C., A/Smn., 1917
On the Arras Memorial is the name of Tyneside Z/3289 Able Seaman Charles Swanson, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, who died 22/04/1917.

Margaret Allison reports that his father lived at 261 Milburn Road, Ashington, and that Charles was 25 years old when he died.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

Charles was born on March 27th 1892. He was working as a miner living with his father, Robert at 261, Milburn Road, Ashington when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on January 4th 1915.

He joined the Hawke Battalion in Gallipoli on August 20th 1915 and was invalided to the UK on September 30th 1915 suffering from Dysentery.

Charles joined the Nelson Battalion in France on November 25th 1916 and was posted as being killed in action on April 22nd 1917.

Charles Swanson is remembered in Ashington on A17.01 (A17.27) and A17.43
