ASHINGTON

Turnbull, G., Petty Off., 1916
In Ancre British Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel is the Commonwealth War Grave of Tyneside Z/3277 Petty Officer Gilbert Turnbull, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 13/11/1916.

Margaret Allison reports that his address in 1911 was 13 Fourth Row, Ashington, and that he was 19 years old when he died.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

Gilbert was born on April 8th 1896. He was working as a miner living with his parents, Gilbert and Jane Anne at 13, Fourth Row, Ashington when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on January 7th 1915.

He joined the Drake Battalion on July 17th 1915 in Gallipoli and was invalided to the UK on October 23rd 1915 suffering from Dysentery.

Gilbert joined the Howe Battalion in France on August 20th 1916 and was promoted to Acting Petty Officer on June 24th 1916 at the age of twenty.

Gilbert was killed in action on November 13th 1916.

He is remembered in Ashington on A17.01 (A17.27), A17.06, A17.08, A17.24 and A17.43
