ASHINGTON

Shilan, F., A/Smn, M.M., 1918
On Vis-en-Artois Memorial is the name of Tyneside Z/2354 Able Seaman Frank Shilan, M.M., serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 02/09/1918.

Margaret Allison states that he lived at 120 Woodhorn Road, Ashington, and that he was aged 25 years when he died.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

Frank was born on August 19th 1891. He was working as a miner living with his wife, Anne at 120, Woodhorn Road, Ashington when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on December 12th 1914.

He joined the 3rd Platoon, "C" Company of the Collingwood Battalion and transferred to the Anson Battalion on June 8th 1915.

Frank was hospitalised with Influenza on December 18th 1916 and rejoined the Anson Battalion on January 27th 1917. He was granted UK leave on February 21st 1917 and remained in the UK afterwards awaiting the award of a commission. The award of a Military Medal was gazetted on February 4th 1918.

Frank rejoined the Anson Battalion in France on July 26th 1918 and was killed in action on September 2nd 1918.

Frank Shilan is remembered in Ashington on A17.01 (A17.27) and A17.43
