Middlemiss, J.R., A/Smn., 1917
On the Tyne Cot Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, is the name of Tyneside Z/2802 Able Seaman John Robert Middlemiss, serving with the Howe Battalion, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, who died 26/10/1917.

He was the son of Elizabeth Ann Middlemiss, of 11, Garden City Villas, Ashington, and the late Nathaniel Middlemiss.

Morpeth Herald 23/11/1917 carries a brief obituary:
ROLL OF HONOUR
MIDDLEMISS.- Killed in action on October 26th, 1917, John Robert Middlemiss, Z/2802T, Acting Able Seaman (Higher Grade), Howe Battalion, R.N.D., aged 22 years, eldest son of Mr and Mrs [Nathaniel] Middlemiss, of 10 Ninth Row, Ashington Colliery, and grandson of the late John and Mary Huntley.

Morpeth Herald 30/11/1917 carries the following:
Acting A.B. John Robert Middlemiss, aged 22, of 10 Ninth Row, Ashington, has been killed in action. He was a member of the R.N.D.

Margaret Allison states that in 1911 his address was 10 Ninth Row, Ashington.

Colin Boyd has supplied the following:

John was born on 18th August 1895. He was working as a miner living with his parents, Nathaniel and Elizabeth at 10, Ninth Row, Ashington when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on 2nd January 1915.

He joined the Howe Battalion on 1st March 1915 and served until he was hospitalised with Scabies on 14th October 1915.

After rejoining the Howe Battalion on 3rd November 1915 John was invalided to the UK on 21st November 1916 suffering from gun shot wounds to the neck and right thigh.

After rejoining the Battalion on 2nd May 1917 in France John was killed in action on 26th October 1917.
