William McLellan was born in 1885 at Jarrow, Durham. His parents, both from Scotland, were Neil and Margaret McLennan. The 1891 Census shows the McLellan family living at Jarrow, South Shields where his father was working as a ship riveter. William at this time was 7 years old and a scholar. Siblings in the household include Samuel, 9, James, 7, Neil, 3 and Margaret, aged less than one year.

In 1901 William lived at 146, Hope Street, Jarrow aged 15, working as a stoneman (sic) and his father employed a boiler maker. William married Margaret Thompson, born about 1889 from Jarrow in 1908 at Tynemouth.

The 1911 Census indicates William living at 92½, Woodhorn Road, Hirst, Ashington, Northumberland where he was married and working as a stoneman in the coal mines. His brother Neil was also in the household.

Military Pension Index Card records his wife Margaret and children, Isabella, William James, and Eleanor.

His photo shows a connection with Choppington but the memorials in that district do not bear his name. However his name is included at Ashington.

William McLellan is remembered in Ashington on A17.43
