On the Arras Memorial is the name of Tyneside Z/5946 Able Seaman James Crea Hesp, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 22/07/1916.

James was born on March 19th 1896. He was working as a miner living with his father, John Henry at 75, Portia Street, Ashington when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on July 8th 1915.

He joined the Hood Battalion on January 8th 1916 and was killed in action in France on July 22nd 1916. James was shot in the chest by a sniper when on sentry duty at night.

The following is a list of his effects that were forwarded to the Adjutant Generals Office: ID disc, 6 foreign coins, 1 wallet containing letters,postcards and photos, 3 devotional books, 2 notebooks, 1 purse, 1 watch Guerre Europeenne (no glass), 3 coloured handkerchiefs, 1 razor, 1 pocket knife, 1 bracelet, 2 sleevelets, 1 snakeskin and 1 cap ribbon.
