Graham, W.L., A/Smn., 1916

On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of Tyneside Z/3302 Able Seaman William Lauder Graham, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 13/11/1916.

In Ashington (Holy Sepulchre) Churchyard is a family headstone for Graham which reads:

In loving memory of
Elizabeth
beloved wife of William Graham
who died at Ashington
July 30th 1933, aged 70 years.
Also the above William Graham
Died 21st Dec. 1937
Aged 76 years.
also their beloved sons
George and William Lauder Graham, R.N.D.
Killed in France 15th & 13th Nov. 1916
aged 21 & 19 years.

Margaret Allison adds that his parents lived at 9 Beatrice Street, Ashington, and that he was 19 years of age when he died.

Colin Boyd has submitted the following:

William was born on 6th October 1897 and was working as a miner living with his father, William at 90, Castle Terrace, Ashington when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on 9th January 1915. He joined the Benbow Battalion on 5th March 1915 and served until 5th June 1915 when he was hospitalised with a bayonet wound to the left shoulder.

William joined the Anson Battalion on 16th July 1915 and went sick on 26th October 1915. On recovery he joined the Nelson Battalion on 2nd December 1915 and was posted as wounded and missing assumed died of wounds on 13th November 1916.

William was the brother of George Graham
