In Ashington (Holy Sepulchre) Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 1149385 Sergeant (Navigator) John Patterson, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died 22/12/1942.

The headstone reads:

John Patterson
Sgt. Observer. R.A.F. (V.R.)
Beloved son
(the rest is obscured)

Sgt. Patterson was serving with 26 O.T.U. He was a crew member of Wellington IC Z8950 which took off on a night bombing training exercise. The aircraft was involved in a mid-air collision with another Wellington in Buckinghamshire. All crew were killed.
