ASHINGTON

Park, W., 2nd Lieut., 1918
On the Pozieres Memorial is the name of Second Lieutenant William Park, serving with the Durham Light Infantry who died 21/03/1918.

He is named in the Masonic Roll of Honour in Freemason's Hall, London as being a member of 2868 Ashington Lodge. See Northumberland County Notes

"The information given below in respect of some of the brethren is the best possible conclusions from Lodge records, Grand Lodge records & Commonwealth War Graves Commission

The second son of Robert and Margaret Park. He was born at Glebe Cottage, Ashington, in the Township of Ashington and Sheepwash, Northumberland in 1886 and was a Clerk employed by the Ashington Coal Company and resided at Ashington Cottage, Ashington, Northumberland.

He was Initiated on the 28th February 1912; Passed on the 27th March 1912 and Raised on the 20th June 1912.

The husband of Mary J. Clark Park of Spottiswoode Street, Edinburgh, he died of wounds on the 21st March 1918 aged 32 and is Remembered on the Pozieres Memorial, France Panel 68 and 72 and the Ashington War Memorial. A Memorial Plaque was dedicated and placed in the Lodge Room at the November meeting 2009.

Extracts from the Lodge Minutes:
At his Initiation the Provincial Grand Master, Col. Charles Warren Napier Clavering accompanied by Officers of the Provincial Grand Lodge were present this being the first official visit since the Lodge was Consecrated. Bro. Park was Passed with eight other Brethren and Raised with three other Brethren. His brother Edward joined the Lodge in 1913.

His death was announced at the April 1918 meeting, “W.Bro R Joise, DC, spoke in feeling terms of the loss sustained by the Lodge by the death of Bro. 2nd Lieutenant William Park. A vote of sympathy was passed to his Widow and family and the Secretary was instructed to convey this to them.”

William Park is remembered at Ashington on A17.06, A17.08 and A17.43, at Ellington on E21.01 and in Gateshead on G39.030
