Robert Smith sent this e-mail:
Some time ago I updated with text and a photograph, the national database of Great War casualties in respect of Mr Crawford. I had seen an image of him on YouTube (Great battles of World War One the Somme Here come Kitchener's Army). At almost the end of the video there is an image of James in a newspaper. It was put in the article, by James and Mary Crawford of 53 Fourth Row, Ashington, Northumberland (now demolished) seeking information of his whereabouts, being missing in action in the Somme battlefield.
I thought it a very poignant act and felt for his parents in their time of loss. There should now be an image of James listed against his name on the national database(previously no image on record)
He is listed as having been a coal hewer prior to the war. His qualities as a soldier, were noted quickly, being made Corporal in such a short time after enlistment.
A number of persons are listed on the voters roll for that time, being an extended family.
The image can still be seen on Youtube.
I hope this information of this sad event is of use to you.

James Crawford is remembered in Ashington on A17.01 (A17.27), A17.06, A17.08 and A17.43
