ASHINGTON

Oxley, E., A/Smn., 1917
In Varennes Military Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of KX/448 Able Seaman Ernest Oxley, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 05/02/1917.

Margaret Allison reports that he lived at 38 Sycamore Road, Ashington, and was aged 21 years when he died.

Colin Boyd has submitted the following:

Ernest was born on August 1st 1895. He was working as a miner living at 38, Sycamore Street, Ashington when he enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers on September 2nd 1914. His next of kin is noted as his mother, Elizabeth living at 6, Enfield Road, Elswick, Newcastle upon Tyne.

He transferred to the RNVR on September 7th 1914 and was posted to the Hood Battalion on September 9th 1914. Ernest was hospitalised on May 6th 1915 with a gun shot wound to the right leg.

He rejoined the Hood Battalion on August 15th 1915 and was invalided to the UK on November 25th 1915 suffering from Myalgia.

Whilst serving with the 3rd Reserve Battalion in the UK Ernest was sentenced to 28 days' detention on September 14th 1916 for altering a medical certificate. On October 13th 1916 whilst serving at the Base Depot at Etaples he was convicted of being drunk in camp at 9.30 am and was sentenced to 21 days Field Punishment No. 1. Ernest received a further 28 days Field Punishment on November 27th 1916 for absence.

The following month he faced four charges (1) Leaving a guard without permission, (2) Disobedience of an order given to him by an officer, (3) Impertinence to an officer, (4) Insolence to two Petty Officers, for which he received 28 days Field Punishment No. 1.

Ernest joined the Hawke Battalion on November 25th 1916 and was seriously wounded on February 4th 1917. He died in the 4th Casualty Clearing Station on February 5th 1917 from the effects of a shell wound to the abdomen.

Note: When his medals were forwarded his mother was then Mrs. E. Nicholson living at 87, Lower Cuthbert Street, Gateshead.
