Tyneside Scottish Badge

On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 231249 Company Serjeant Major William Barnard Nelson, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

Margaret Allison reports that he enlisted in Bedlington.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

William Bernard Nelson was born in Peterburgh, South Australia in 1883; his parents have not been identified. In 1911 William, aged 28 and single, was living at Pelton, County Durham where he was a visitor in the household, working as a miner.

William married Thomasina F Cunningham in 1912 at St Bede’s RC Church in Bedlington when she was about 17 years old. William enlisted at Bedlington whilst living at 1, Second Street, Netherton, a village close to Bedlington, which is where his wife and her brother John William Cunningham (also killed in action) were living in 1911.

It should be noted the name Gulielmo Bernardo Nelson appears in some records but does concur with other information.
