Owens, T., P/Off., 1917

On the Tyne Cot Memorial is the name of Tyneside Z/1461 Petty Officer Thomas Owens, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 26/10/1917.

Margaret Allison records that in 1911 his address was in Fourth Avenue, Ashington, and that he was 21 years old when he died.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

Thomas was born on July 4th 1896. He was working as a miner living with his father, Samuel at 59, Fourth Row, Ashington when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on November 10th 1914.

He joined the Howe Battalion in France on November 25th 1916 and was posted as being killed in action on October 26th 1917.

He was the brother of George who also died.

Thomas Owens is remembered in Ashington on A17.01 (A17.27), A17.08 and A17.43
