ASHINGTON

Lamb, J., L/Smn., 1918
In Cambrai East Military Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of Tyneside Z/1483 Leading Seaman J. Lamb, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 30/09/1918.

Margaret Allison states that he lived in Ashington and was aged 26 when he died.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

James was born on May 30th 1882. He was working as a miner living with his father, William at 43, Portia Street, Ashington when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on November 10th 1914. His next of kin was later changed to wife, S. living at 240, Hawthorn Road, Hirst.

He joined "C" Company of the Hawke Battalion on May 3rd 1915 and served until September 9th 1915 when he went sick with Dysentery for which he was invalided to the UK on December 6th 1915.

James joined the 189th MG Battalion on February 12th 1917 and then joined the 188th MG Battalion on November 19th 1917 before rejoining the 189th Battalion on February 17th 1918.

James finally joined the 63rd MG Battalion on March 1st 1918 and was posted as killed in action on September 30th 1918.
