ASHINGTON

Eke, T., A/Smn., 1916
In Mesnil Communal Cemetery Extension is the Commonwealth War Grave of Tyneside Z/1272 Able Seaman T.H. Eke, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.

Margaret Allison states that his father lived at 41 Juliet Street, and that he was aged 21 years when he died.

Colin Boyd has offered the following:

Thomas was born on May 12th 1895. He was working as a miner, living with his father, Thomas at 41, Juliet Street, Ashington when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on November 6th 1914.

He joined the Hawke Battalion on February 20th 1915 and served until August 18th 1915 when he was hospitalised with an undiagnosed problem.

Thomas rejoined the Hawke Battalion on November 13th 1915 and died of wounds in Mesnil Dressing Station on November 13th 1916.

Thomas Henry Eke is remembered in Ashington on A17.01 (A17.27) and A17.43 and in Hirst on H62.13
