On Ypres (Menin Gate) is the name of 1297 Private Robert Young, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 26/04/1915.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

Robert Young was born about 1890 at Newcastle. His parents were William Young from Newcastle and Mary Young from Carlisle. In 1901 Robert was living at Byker, Newcastle, with five of his siblings in his parents’ house.

The 1911 Census shows Robert, age 22, living at 106, Maple Street, Hirst, Northumberland. By this time he was married to Dorothy, whose maiden name was Robson, and they were living in the house of Dorothy’s parents. The marriage took place a few weeks before the census of that year. Robert was employed as a putter in the coal mines.

Military records confirm his widow was Dorothy who was allocated his effects and they had two children, Mathew and Violet.

Robert's brother-in-law Cuthbert Robson also died.

Robert’s Medal card indicates he went to France April 20th 1915. Robert enlisted at Ashington and his photo shows he was listed as missing and associated with Cambois, though his name appears on a memorial at Ashington.
