Gardiner, J.W., Cpl., 1915
In Railway Chateau Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 1083 Corporal J.W. Gardiner, serving with the 446th Field Company, Royal Engineers, who died 04/05/1915.

Morpeth Herald 14/05/1915 carries a brief obituary:
Mrs Gardner [sic], Chestnut Street, Hirst, has been notified by the Captain of his company that her husband, Corporal J.W. Gardner [sic], 1st [sic] Field Company Royal Engineers, has been killed by shrapnel. He leaves three children. The deceased served in the South African War, for which he had two medals, and was a well-known resident of the Ashington district.
