Joseph was born on July 1st 1895. He was working as a miner, living with his father at 67, Newbiggin Road, Seaton Hirst when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on January 15th 1915.
He joined the Benbow Battalion on May 3rd 1915 and then transferred to the Nelson Battalion on June 12th 1915.
Joseph was posted as missing assumed killed in action in Gallipoli on July 13th 1915.
