On the Runnymede Memorial is the name of 1533388 Flight Sergeant Norman Thompson Steele, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, who died 28/01/1944.

Flight Sgt Steele was killed when Handley Page Halifax V LK709 KN-R of 77 Squadron was lost with all seven crew members on a mission to Berlin. The cause of the aircraft's loss is not known.

Halifax LK709 KN-R had departed Full Sutton at 0005 for Ops Berlin. It was probably intercepted over Berlin by a Night-Fighter captained by Oblt Josef Kraft (IV/NJG5) and shot down at 0328 for his 11th Abschuss
