Sgt Preston was the rear gunner of Avro Lancaster I PB686 KO-D of 115 Squadron, which was lost whilst returning from Operation Thunderclap, the bombing of Dresden. The Lancaster suffered an engine fire, and the crew abandoned the aircraft, which crashed at Joncourt. Six of the seven crew baled out successfully, but Sgt Preston did not survive the crash.
